Good essay writing is  something that requires skill, a certain amount of hard work and dedication. Majority of students lack that so it is always a struggle to ace tests and graded assignments.

When writing an essay, the aim is to be able to present a topic based on an idea, give a thesis and back it up by means of legitimate information and valid proof. There are several ways to better yourself at essay writing and in this article we will be looking at different tips to make you a better writer by the end of the day.

    Prepare an outline

When beginning an essay, it is advisable to have some sort of plan going forward, don’t just dive in and write off the top of your head. Make an outline of what you expect your essay to look like. Your outline should contain your essay structure and how it progresses through the paragraphs down to the conclusion.

    Draft your thesis

A thesis is simply said to be a statement supported by argument. It is the backbone of your entire essay. Every argument, every point you try to make will be based on your thesis which is your claim on a subject matter. Your thesis should contain one or more sentences in your introduction that strongly affirm your stance. Usually every argument or point made is evaluated on how well they correlate with the thesis.

    Have good technique

It should be known that the way you write is the way you will be assessed. When a reader goes through your essay he will have a personalised view of you based on the impression that you give. Try to be affirmative in your writing, do no second guess or write in a lax manner, doing so will make the audience know that you are sure of what you are saying and you know what you are talking about.

    Structure your essay

We already talked about creating an outline for your essay. When you create your outline, the next step is to structure it. This will be the building block for your essay. Great essays have great structures. From the introduction to the body to the conclusion, everything is well organised and blended. The introduction should gradually lead into the body, which consists of various paragraphs, should be well arranged and harmonised, and the conclusion must do a good job of summarising everything putting the cherry on the pie.

    Punctuation and grammar is important

If you want the message in your essay to be delivered clear as crystal, you must know that things as little as punctuation are quite important. Wrong spelling and omissive punctuation will only make a mess of an otherwise well thought out piece of work. Strive to have full understanding of basic grammar, verb-subject agreement and article usage. Be sure to use the right diction for the right scenarios, avoid any unnecessary words or sentences that may take away from the main point of the essay.

    Understand the essay topic

You cannot write about what you don’t know or understand. It is good to have background knowledge of the topic and what you are trying to prove. Do some research to have a better understanding of the topic, gather information and evidence to prove your points and always keep the main argument in mind. Analyse any evidence that you have and make sure it is valid and that it directly supports your thesis. When it is seen that everything aligns and has a good connection the reader will know you have a good understanding of the topic.

    The perfect conclusion

Often undermined by lots of essay writers, a good conclusion lives an imprint on the minds of the audience. Your conclusion should bring all your previously provided evidence and information into a few sentences. It should reiterate the thesis without sounding repetitious.

Once you are done with your essay, take some time to go over and proofread your work. Be on the lookout for simple spelling mistakes, grammatical errors and poor sentence structures. If unsure, get some essay writing help or someone that will help you go over your written work. Read your essay out loud and see that everything makes sense. Keep practicing these steps and you will find yourself writing better essays in no time.
