Things to Consider Before You Start Your Own Fitness Facility

If you cannot imagine your day without working out and you are looking to invest in a new business opportunity, opening your own gym might be worth a shot. After all, this is a multibillion-dollar industry, and gyms in America are not really struggling for customers. Of course, this doesn’t mean you should dive into this industry before thinking things through.  Being your own boss, making your own rules, working when you want and keeping all your hard-earned money sounds amazing, but before you take any steps you need to take so many small things into account. If you wish to be a successful business owner, here is a list of things you need to consider.

Making a business plan

Maybe you have found great workout attire on , decided how to paint your gym and designed your business cards, but opening your own fitness facility requires so much more work. For instance, a good business plan is the backbone of any business, so make sure you take all the necessary steps before moving forward. You will need to conduct research and see if whether working out is popular in your area, what locations are available and are people interested in hiring personal trainers. Of course, you will also need to check out your competition.

If there are several gyms in that area, you will need to see what they offer and find a way to separate yourself from them and stand out from the crowd. In addition, you will need to set your short-term as well as long-term goals, so you can easily track your progress and evaluate your business.

Money, money, money

Starting your own business is not cheap, so you need to realize that you will need a fair amount of money to open your gym. There are some obvious expenses, such as the cost of your gym equipment, but besides them there are also those hidden expenses that can mess up your timeline completely and make reaching those short-term goals almost impossible.

Paying rent as well as utilities is something that you will probably take into account, but you can easily forget about insurance and liability. Also, you will need to install rubber flooring or carpet, which will cost you from $2-5 per sq/ft. Expenses such as garbage bins, whiteboards, benches, frames, posters, mini-fridge, towels, business cards or even toilet paper holders can pile up very quickly so be prepared.

Maybe you want to open your own gym so you can be a full-time coach. That is great, but if you are a gym owner, you will have so many other part-time jobs as well, unless you decide to hire more people, which will significantly increase your expenses. You will need to be a janitor because no one wants to work out in a filthy gym. Tasks such as vacuuming, scrubbing the floors, cleaning toilets, washing the towels, wiping down equipment or taking out the garbage will just keep coming, so keep in mind that you will spend up to seven hours a week doing them. You will also need to be your accountant, marketing expert and a secretary.

Crazy hours

A lot of people start their own business because then they will be able to work when they want. However, when your business is taking its first steps, you will need to spend more hours in the gym than at home if you want to own a successful business facility. That means less time you get will to spend with your family, not to mention your friends.

Starting your own fitness facility is not an easy journey, and it can easily wear you down. However, at the end of the road you will get to reap the rewards of owning a gym and enjoy your every day at work.
