Check out the most common topics

What is your biggest fear on exam day? Most candidates admit that it is a fear of getting a question that they will not be able to answer because they do not know the topic. Others tend to think that IELTS examiners are looking for some “best possible ideas” that answer the question, and for that they will get the highest scores. It is not true. All you have to do is answer the questions and explain your understanding of the problem through arguments and examples. The relevance of ideas is important.

As you prepare for IELTS, read more on the various topics that may happen to you on the exam. This is the easiest and most effective way to prepare not only for the written part, but also for the Reading and Speaking sections. How can this be done? Read international newspapers or magazines and review old essay questions and sample answers.

There are also topics that will never appear in IELTS assignments. These are topics related to religion, politics and war. Thus, there is no need to delve into them.

    Learn to generate ideas

When you plan to write an essay, you need to find ideas on a particular topic or aspect of that topic. Usually 2-4 ideas will suffice depending on the type of essay. DO NOT start writing an essay if you have no idea what you are going to write about. Generating ideas is a skill that needs to be developed.

First, try to generate ideas without writing an essay. Start by asking whu questions related to the topic of the essay.

    Structure your essay

When you already have ideas for your essay, don’t forget to organize them correctly in separate paragraphs. The essay should consist of:

    Introduction (1 paragraph)

    Main body (2-3 paragraphs)

    Conclusion (1 paragraph)

The paragraphs give a clear structure to the essay and help the reader understand your reasoning. Organize each paragraph around one main idea. Each paragraph should have a specific example that supports and illustrates your main idea. If you clearly structure your ideas, explanations and examples before you start writing, you will get a higher score.

    Use sense parts

Always describe what you can see, hear, feel, touch and feel. The description of sensory details (sight, smell, sound, touch, taste) is an important part of a descriptive essay. For example, think that you are trying to describe a tree in your garden. Instead of writing “There are flowers in a tree”, write how it looks, smells and feels. Try to describe your emotions and feelings. They enrich the essay.

    Brain storm

First, think about who, who, or where you want to describe. (This is if the name is not provided.) Then determine exactly what features you want to focus on. Think about why you chose this particular topic.

Pay attention to the structure of the essay

Each paragraph should describe different aspects of the topic. For example, imagine that you are writing an essay about your loved one. The introduction may discuss why you are talking about this particular person, that is, against the background of an essay. Then, in the main text of the essay, you can describe the different characteristics of that person. In one paragraph you can describe the appearance of a person, and in another paragraph you can describe his or her qualities.

Your conclusion should contain a summary of the main text of the essay. Try to connect the end of the essay to the beginning. For example, if you said “I’ve always admired the ocean.” In the introduction to the essay you can write that My passion for the deep blue ocean is deeply rooted in my soul. A trip to the beach never lifts my spirits…

Read your essay. Make sure you write the details so that the essay creates vivid images. See if all the details, descriptions are relevant, suitable for the essay. Make sure you forget to add minor but important details. Remove any unnecessary details. Double check for grammar or spelling mistakes.
